Clarify the change you are looking for and then create a clear and confident course of action!
Seasons change and so do we!
Before we even contemplate the changing seasons and our own path ahead, we should acknowledge the huge shift we as a country are experiencing as we finished our official period of mourning the death of Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II last week and anticipate new beginnings with King Charles III. For many regardless of having never met her, this has triggered a real and surprising sense of grief ... for the stability and constancy she brought to the country and for the way she handled herself with poise, dignity and grace. We have and share our own memories of this truly inspiring leader ...
The Summer holidays feel like an age ago! Sand swept away (except in my mini countryman as we're going back to Wales this weekend and it is being cleaned after we bring the other half of the beach back 😂). The kids have started settling back into a new academic year at school. For us, as for many families, this means transitioning to a new school too. And so what about you???
'What about me???' I hear you ask.
'Yes what about you??? What do you want to be doing in 2022/23?'
Good question huh!
Here are some pointers to help you to pause and to reflect on what you want for yourself going forward.
1. Get to know your backstory
Sounds crazy doesn't it but how often do you stop to appreciate your own story and how you've come to be where you are today. Grab yourself a brew and do a mini CV review.
What were your career highlights and lowlights?
What has been your greatest accomplishment?
What working relationships have been the most fulfilling and for what reason are these the stand out ones for you?
In what setting are you the happiest?
What are you doing when you're in the flow?
You can also do this on a personal level thinking about your timeline and key events, relationships etc. in your life to date.
2. What are your priorities today?
Once you've got your top 10 values, score each of them out of 10 for how they are currently being met (1 - not at all, 10 - completely). It's worth looking at both your life and work values to see where the overlaps are too and to check for alignment and authenticity.
3. How are you taking exquisite care of yourself?
The only certain thing about change is that it too changes and that's okay. If you're just not feeling 'it' this month and don't know what 'it' is any more, then the first and most important thing you can do is to take very good care of yourself. Perhaps your energy levels are depleted and you're experiencing a lot of negative mind chatter. As you would encourage a good friend who has lost their mojo to enjoy some TLC and practice self care and indeed self compassion, so you should to. As the expression goes 'you can't pour from an empty cup' and you certainly can't be making meaningful choices about your future.
4. Be prepared to enter the stretch zone
Sounds scary doesn't it! I You may be familiar with the comfort, stretch and panic zones. If we remain within our comfort zone too long, whilst it feels a comfortable and safe place to be, over time we become more constrained and actually our personal growth stagnates. We've probably all heard someone talking about losing their confidence on the motorway because their partner has done the driving for many years. So ask yourself honestly where you're at. It's okay to be here but it's also healthy to apply some stretch sometimes too. That's where we challenge ourselves a little, experience those butterflies in the tummy but with that importantly comes support.
5. Get support You need to understand what change you want to see and be committed to taking action. Draw on support from others whether this be friends, family or a someone at work if you're focusing on your career. It may also be that you're looking for someone independent who can help your to clarify what you want for yourself in the first instance and then to support and challenge you to bridge that gap.
If the latter speaks to you and you want help for 2022/23, then get in touch to book your FREE 30 minute clarity call and we'll get you focused on the changes you want to see and achieving results quicker than if you were working towards them on your own.
